marketers on issues and concepts that affect our industry, and I must say
that even when there is "lively" disagreement, the core discussion tends to
be an education for all who follow it. This is great for the folks here who
truly view themselves as "professionals" in the network marketing industry.
I sometimes see other so called "network marketers" negatively commenting
on the amount of time some members spend exchanging ideas here, as if they
should be spending more time building their businesses. I have never
believed that to be true, because in my experience, the back and forth
communication with colleagues can be just as valuable to your business as
"prospecting" for a new team member, or customer, especially if it helps
you to be better as a professional.
In the practice of law, I always found it helpful in all that I did to pick
the brains of other more experienced lawyers, and even ones with the same
level of experience as I had. This was in fact how much of the techniques
and knowledge is passed down in any profession. We have only to refer to
Chapter 10 of Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" to understand how the
"Mastermind" principle can benefit us in all that we do.
One of the problems I see in this industry is that most network marketers
don't see themselves as true professionals. In fact, they largely view
their businesses as something they do "on the side", just to make a little
extra money. I attribute this phenomenon to a complete lack of appreciation
by many network marketers of the true potential in network marketing, and
to the fact that it DOES require work to make it happen.
Many of us have become tunnel visioned into believing that having a job
should be our primary focus. As a result, we never fully digest the
benefits that network marketing could provide us. We then fail to take it
as seriously as we do our full-time jobs. Taking it seriously doesn't
necessarily mean working it full-time, but it does mean employing the same
level of enthusiasm, diligence, dedication, and energy that we demonstrate
in our jobs, even in a part-time capacity.
Maybe that is the problem though. Maybe folks don't demonstrate energy and
enthusiasm for their full-time jobs. There are so many people that are
unhappy with their careers, their work environment, or their earning
potential that maybe we have lost the ability to be enthusiastic about a
jobs. That could actually be a good thing if we could wake up and see the
potential in network marketing.
Of course, seeing the vision is only part of the equation. If we are
willing to change direction and embrace new ideas, we also have to be
willing to learn, and get better at this new thing we are doing. Workplace
skills don't translate into success in network marketing, so we have to be
willing to learn new things, get better, and employ what we learn. That is
what a true professional does.
If people came to this industry with the right mindset, success rates would
soar, and there would be fewer debates about the merits of network
marketing as a worthy endeavor. People would be applying to join your team
the same way they flock to apply for jobs. What a concept that would be!
In any event, I hope that all of you who regularly participate here, even
in "lurker mode", consider yourselves true professionals, because you are
just that. Our reward in the end, if we continue to pursue our vision will
not only be financial success, but the satisfaction of knowing that we
contributed a very valuable gift to society by helping everyday people
change their scope, and see other attractive options for the enjoyment of a
better way of life.
Good luck to all of you, and thanks for all that you do!
Wealthy regards,
Glenn K. Garnes
